In our first installment of “Meet the Staff” series, we’ll get to know Emily Bewley–one of our amazing hygienists here at the office.
How long have you been working as a hygienist?
I graduated from dental hygiene school in May of 2012. While I waited for a full-time position, I made myself available as a fill-in hygienist for several different offices both in Garden City and Dodge City. In August of that year, I had the opportunity to cover a maternity leave for a hygienist at Dr. McVey's office. The following January, they hired me on full-time and I was officially part of the team!
What inspired you to pursue your career?
Taking care of my teeth had always been important to me from the time I was little. When I entered high school, I had absolutely no idea what career I was going to pursue, but I did know it would have something to do with helping people. The same year I was starting high school, my older sister, Deena, was starting her first year of dental hygiene school. The profession sparked my interest and ever since that point, there was no other career I wanted to pursue more!
What is your favorite part about your job?
That is a really hard question. I have so many! My number one favorite part of my job, though, is my patients. They are the reason I do what I do. Not only do I enjoy helping my patients understand the importance of good oral care, but I absolutely love talking with them, laughing with them, and getting to know them.
What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies are pretty simple. I love being with my family and my friends! My husband, Ryan, and I really enjoy traveling any chance we get. A few months back, we had the opportunity to travel back to one of our favorite destinations, Jamaica. We are already anxious to go back! In June, we became homeowners, which added a few more hobbies to my life. There are always projects I can be working on, and we are really enjoying making it ours. No longer living in an apartment also meant I finally got to adopt a kitten and my husband finally got his boxer puppy. Rougie and Dixie definitely keep us laughing and entertained! We also love watching Texas Rangers baseball and Cowboys football!
Tell us one of your bad habits.
I asked my husband to think of one of my very, very worst bad habits. The sweet man that he is, he “couldn't think of any.” So, I had to come up with one on my own. I'm sure I have many, but one that first comes to mind is my tendency to be too hard on myself. I have been told that from the time I was in grade school, all throughout my school days, and up in to my college years. I've heard “perfectionist” many times in my life!
Thank you so much for reading this week's newsletter. We'll be meeting another staff member next month!
