CROWNS

A crown is a tooth-shaped prosthetic that covers the whole tooth. A crown may be placed to fix a broken tooth, to protect a weak tooth, to complete a dental implant, to improve the appearance of discolored teeth, etc. We offer crowns in porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. However, we recommend porcelain to maintain a natural look. Crowns last a long time: 10-15 years. To ensure that it lasts that long, regularly floss and brush and avoid chewing hard foods, such as ice. This preserves the crown.

INLAYS/ONLAYS

Inlays and onlays—aka partial crowns—are used when the base of the tooth is left, but parts of it have been removed due to infection or an old filling needs replacing. An inlay sits on top of the tooth, and an overlay fits on and over the cusp of the tooth. An overlay is a bit larger and provides more support and structure to the tooth.

They help to give the tooth shape, strength, and stop any more damage or infection. Inlays and onlays can be made from gold, a composite resin, or porcelain. Give us a call if you have any questions about this procedure.

BRIDGES

A dental bridge may be used when one or more teeth are missing or a tooth has severe decay. Dr. McVey takes a mold of the patient’s teeth, so that when the lab makes the bridge it will feel as natural and comfortable as possible. The lab creates it from either porcelain, gold, alloys, or metals depending on what the dentist chooses. It has two crowns on both ends cemented to the teeth bridging the space between them where the missing tooth once stood.
